Community and Peace

Passage: Colossians 1:19–23
Jesus has reconciled disorder (brought by sin) and brought all things into order.
• Sin corrupts, but Christ restores.
• Sin kills, but Christ resurrects.
• Death should be final, but not in Christ.
• Broken relationship with Him is restored by His atoning sacrifice on the cross.
Peace is accomplished in the perfect person of the God-man Jesus Christ. Jesus is everything that we need. Jesus is God. He didn’t just reconcile mankind, he reconciled ALL things. If we do a quick analysis of Paul’s intent in this letter to the church at Colossae, we have to conclude that he’s deliberate about his emphasis. He has used the word “ALL” 12 times already in Colossians, and we’re just creeping into the second half of chapter 1.
This is the atonement applied to our account. Remember Colossae was full of Gentiles, who were treated as aliens even among the Jews, yet were now equal recipients of God’s grace and saving power.
We need to trust Him. Even when our circumstances are entirely different than what we expect. This leads us to be stable and steadfast, anchored deep, rooted in Christ Jesus and bold enough to stand against opposition - even when it’s not culturally or politically correct to do so.
