After so much discouragement and disobedience, the book ends with a message of hope. It is difficult for us to wrap our heads around the depths of despair the nation of Israel felt at this time. The magnificent temple had been destroyed, something unimaginable to any Jew, and everyone could plainly see that the rebuilt one would pale in comparison to the former (Haggai 2:3). The Davidic line seemed to have been broken (Jeremiah 22:30) and the days of Israelite glory had all but faded out of existence. Into this scene, God, through Haggai, points His people beyond the immediate to the amazing future He has planned, solidified by the past through which He has proven Himself always faithful. God has a beautiful plan, and it will come to pass in His time. Rejoice in Him, for He is great, and He is good!
