Self-absorption
July 21, 2024 Preacher: Jeff Eastwood Series: Esther
Passage: Esther 5:9–14
Idolatry is such an insidious sin, slowly destroying the one who participates in it all while the worshipper adores the very object that is leading to its eventual demise. Haman is completely obsessed with himself and worships public recognition above all else. Thus, in his mind, his entire resume is erased by one Jew, Mordecai, who refuses to give him the one thing he adores supremely. Idolatry is also so subtlety destructive because we never truly trust false gods, even as we hold them up as our greatest treasure. If we did, we wouldn't be so shaken when they are threatened, yet, the very reality that we claim is giving us the most stability is the false god that causes us the most insecurity. May God save us from replacing him with anything else. Only he can save us and bring us all the way home.
