Pergamum is a church that has suffered persecution and martyrdom like Smyrna but they have been less careful, embracing elements of their culture that are leading them away from Christ as their all-sufficiency. As it seems to more often than not be the little foxes that destroy the vines, it can so easily become the small moments of sin and lack of diligence that widen the gap between us and our Saviour, usually without us even noticing the distance widening. Especially in the busyness of serving him may we consistently check our hearts to see if our affection for Christ has waned and may we constantly come back to his love for us as we seek to love and obey him.
