The church at Sardis has a history of great service to God but have been riding that reputation well past it being accurate and are, as Jesus says, dead. They have flatlined, pretending to have life but have abandoned the gospel long ago and have nothing to offer. They pine for the "good ole days" even as they dwindle in spiritual vitality daily. This church is an example of what happens when a family of believers in Jesus lack vigilance and tolerate sin in their midst. Failing to pass on the life-transforming truth of Jesus they rely on previous energy, spending it all with no means to replenish it. May we heed this warning and wake up to areas where we are living life as if the power of Jesus and the Holy Spirit are irrelevant.
