Passage: Psalm 109:1–31
This week, we looked at one of the imprecatory psalms, a call for God's judgment on sinners in a way that typically falls uneasily on Christian ears. As those who occupy history post the cross, we can be shocked to hear the words of the Old Testament saints as they beg God to deal strongly and generationally with sin. We can commit at least two errors as we do. The first is to deny that this is part of God's inspired Scriptures, and the second is to hear it as personal vengeance and unrestrained, selfish rage. We know the first cannot be true, and we need to better understand sin and its effects to help us avoid the second mistake. Ultimately, we must see all of the Bible through the lens of Jesus, and as always, understanding the gospel enables us to not only properly understand these passages but to embrace them rather than be embarrassed by them.
