Loss

January 18, 2026 Preacher: Jeff Eastwood Series: The Book of Job

Passage: Job 1:13–22

On this Sunday, we looked at Job 1:13-22, that devastating part of the first chapter where Job experiences crushing loss. These tragedies, rolling on top of each other, seem breathtakingly awful, an almost unbearable wave of grief and pain. We want to yell, "Stop!", fearing this is more than any one person could bear. The manner of the telling of these losses is purposeful, and our response is precisely what the author intends us to feel. Despite knowing Job's response, we must be forced to be hit by this tidal wave of suffering if we are to appropriately appreciate Job's worship. In a similar way, we must never forget the depths of evil endured by Jesus for us on the cross, and we ought to likewise marvel at his trust in his Father, as with his dying breath, he commits his spirit to his care. May we hold tightly to God, and loosely to everything else, all for his glory and the good of our own souls and those around us.
