Agony

February 22, 2026 Preacher: Jeff Eastwood Series: The Book of Job

Passage: Job 6:1–30

On this Sunday, we heard Job's continued cry of agony, made even more poignant by his guttural reaction to the shallow comfort offered by Eliphaz. Job's anguish in chapter 6 has two parts, if a structure can be recognized in the midst of his suffering. First, he tries, unsuccessfully as we will see, to explain to his friends how hard the wrath of God falls on him. When the one you love and adore stabs you with arrows of wrath, there is a special pain that is experienced. Secondly, Job needs his friends to understand that their simplistic religious rubric falls far short of answering the questions he has or soothing the hurt he suffers. Platitudes cannot bear the weight of his surprise, shock, and suffering under the hand of his heavenly Father. In this, Job points us beyond himself to Jesus, the only one who had an infinitely intimate relationship with the Father scarred by his bearing the full weight of God's wrath against sin.
