Arrogance

March 29, 2026 Preacher: Jeff Eastwood Series: The Book of Job

Passage: Job 11:1–20

It seems that Zophar has been biting his tongue and now bursts forth with swift condemnation for Job. What he says is mostly correct, but it is often the "almost true" theology that does the most damage. Underneath Zophar's tirade is a deep arrogance, and his contempt for Job's questions is barely hidden as he spits out his seeming defense of God's character. Whether he realizes it or not, by trying to shield God from Job's inquiries, he has taken on a role that only God should occupy, and has inadvertently become guilty of the very heresy he claims Job has committed. May we search our hearts daily for residual pride and seek to eradicate it in all its forms.
