On this Sunday, we looked at Bildad's second speech, which is, if possible, even more scathing than his first. In his mind, Job is asking God to completely upend the universe, with all of its laws, structure, and order, just so that Job, a wicked and sinful man, can somehow be declared righteous without repenting. In an effort to make Job see how bad his situation is, Bildad launches into a monologue about the final destination of the wicked, perhaps in an attempt to scare or manipulate Job into "repenting." Bildad is correct regarding how awful sin is, including its consequences, and he is also correct that God will rightly judge sinners. He is incorrect, however, in his approach, and most importantly, he has repeatedly missed the reality that Job is indeed blameless. Deeper than that, he seems to deny the possibility that a sinful man could be declared righteous by a holy God, something God can indeed do because of Jesus, remaining just but also justifying the unrighteous. Praise God, who found a way to fully pay for the penalty of our sin, placing it on Jesus, while not only declaring that penalty paid in full, but giving us Christ's righteousness instead. Amazing grace, how sweet the sound!
