On this Sunday, we looked at Job 21, where Job answers Zophar's retribution with a lament regarding the opposite reality that Job sees and the friends seem to ignore. What about the wicked who so obviously do not suffer? In the rigid worldview of the three friends, the wicked are judged, and the godly are blessed. Since Job knows that he is godly and feels as though he is being judged, it would make sense that the opposite would also be the case, and indeed, the wicked are often "blessed" from an earth-bound perspective, turning this supposedly neat and tidy worldview into "empty nothings" and "falsehood" (Job 21:34). We look forward to once again zooming out of the simplistic philosophy of Job's false comforters and seeing Job's, and our, proper outlook on life under God's gracious sovereignty.
