Being a deacon in a local church means being a leading servant, one who leads by action and example and encourages others to serve. It involves handling much of the administrative work of the ministry so the elders can focus on preaching, teaching, and prayer (Acts 6:1-7). They need to lead a Godly life (1 Timothy 3:8-13). They also lift up the hands of the elders and be the leading servants in the church.
