Presumption

January 7, 2024 Preacher: Jeff Eastwood Series: Daniel

Passage: Daniel 5:1–12

Presumption — defined by one English dictionary as "behavior perceived as arrogant, disrespectful, and transgressing the limits of what is permitted or appropriate". Despite having heard of (and perhaps growing up with) the stories of God's intervention in Nebuchadnezzar's life, and having first-hand experience with God's intervention in his father Nabonidus' life, Belshazzar has not learned the lesson God consistently and graciously has tried to teach those who have come before him: there is a God, and it is not us. Belshazzar takes things several steps further than his predecessors, however, as he uses the temple vessels for a debauched party, openly and flagrantly flaunting his belief that God does not exist, or if He does, He is irrelevant and unimportant. All of that comes to a screeching halt once God's "finger" starts writing on the wall.
